10th
anniversary of the Sakharov Museum in Nizhny Novgorod
The idea was first voiced in January 27, 1990. There were
debates over where the exhibit hall should be placed, as
it seemed impossible to accommodate tlie entire museum in
a tiny apartment that the academician used to occupy during
Ilis exile. Sakharov's followers and admirers appealed to
the Supreme Council of the USSR the same year.
The Andrei D. Sakharov Memorial Apartment Museum opened
in Gorky on May 18, 1991. It consists of three parts: the
apartment itself with its interior restored as it used to
be when the scientist came here for his detention, a photo
exhibition that speaks about Sakharov's social activity
during his last years of life and an exhibition of portraits
devoted to many Nizhegorodians, victims of the totalitarian
regime. The Sarov Nuclear Weaponry Museum and the Federal
Nuclear Center are now assisting in the opening of another
exhibition to tell people about the years the great scientist
spent in Sarov. The exhibition is to open this year.

140
years ago Nizhny Novgorod's first public library
opened
There are three regional and 91 city libraries. They have
about 7,730,000 books. But they all got started from Nizhny
Novgorod's first public library, which welcomed its first
visitors 140 years ago. In 1861, there were
few books in the library and its readers numbered only 361
people. In the 20th century, a number of branches opened
throughout the city. There were more than 300,000 literary
volumes in the Nizhny Novgorod City Public Library before
the revolution. The Lenin State Regional Scientific Library
has become its successor. Now it is one of Russia's largest
regional libraries, having rarest books from ancient sources,
rich private collections and scientific institutions. There
are 24 departments responsible for their specific scope
of work. The Library has about four million documents of
all kinds.
