This year we congratulate two local educational giants.
85th
jubilee of the N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny
Novgorod
 The
idea of establishing a local public university emerged in
1905 in the Nizhny Novgorod City Legislative Assembly. But
it took ten years to materialize, and the Nizhny Novgorod
University opened on January 17, 1916. It was a democratic
educational institution with its door open for all entrants
regardless of gender, age, religion, etc. It received the
state status in 1918.
A reform was launched in 1930, calling for the establishment
of separate institutes based on university departments:
medical, civil engineering, pedagogical, agricultural and
polytechnic. They are all universities and academies today.
However, this process of disintegration was stopped in 1931.
The University was preserved.
It has been a scientific center since the very beginning.
For example, the Nizhny Novgorod Radio Laboratory used to
be an integral part of the University. Today's scientific
institution network originated at the place. The departments
that once separated to become independent establishments
have given rise to the whole system of higher education
in Nizhny Novgorod.

anniversary of the Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical
University turns
The Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University is one
of the country's leading higher educational pedagogical
establishments. Founded in 1911 as a teacher's institute,
it became the higher establishment, a pedagogical institute,
in 1918. It was given the university status in 1993.
The University has trained tens of thousands of highly
skilled teachers in its long history. Its professors are
competent scientists and pedagogues. A lot of graduates
have contributed their knowledge and efforts to national
education and pedagogical science.
There are about 7,000 students at the University. The
establishment incorporates the Psychology Institute, the
pedagogical colleges in Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk,
the Gorodets Pedagogical School, a pedagogical gymnasia,
the Regional Gifted Children Center, high schools and specialized
classes. They form an integral scientific and educational
complex.
The staff includes about 500 professors, among whom there
are 70 Doctors and more than 200 Masters. The University
is also involved in social and humanitarian research,
Oi'lliodox Ni)ii'il4;il legacy study, psychology, ecology,
linguo-didactics and other fields. According lo the Russian
Ministry of Education, the Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical
University ranks fourth among similar higher educational
institutions ill Russia.
