Partnership relations' development between Nizhny Novgorod and Tampere (Finland)


Nizhny Novgorod  Tampere

An active phase in Nizhny Novgorod - Tampere relations was launched in the second half of 1994 by resumed intensive contacts which led to the signing 24.02.1995 of "An Accord about Nizhny Novgorod - Tampere  partnership relations' establishment", where were defined all principal directions of cooperation in the spheres of economics, culture and education. The latter produced a strong impetus for further bilateral contacts on all levels, the sequence of which took the following outlines:

  • 1995, May - organization of a quiz "Do you know Finland?" among the pupils of Nizhny Novgorod schools, four winners or which were sent to a Tampere summer camp.
  • 1995, June - opening ( preceded by a Nizhny Novgorod Office of a Finish consulting company "MARKINVEST")of an Office of Central Finland and Yuvyaskyulski region in Sormovo district of Nizhny Novgorod in order to assist to a process of Russian - Finish business contacts' promotion.
  • 1996, April - a Nizhny Novgorod City Duma delegation's visit to Tampere in the course of which the deputies got acquainted with a Finish system of education and were exchanging experience on its problems' management.
  • 1996, September - signing of "A Memorandum about trilateral cooperation's development between Nizhny Novgorod, Tampere and Essen" by mayors of these cities .
  • 1996, November - a Nizhny Novgorod delegation's official visit (headed by Governor of Nizhegorodian Region and Mayor of Nizhny Novgorod) to Tampere, during which was signed "A Protocol about trade and economic cooperation development's promotion between Nizhny Novgorod Administration and Finish Republic Ministry of Trade and Industry.
  • 1997, July - a youth conference of cities - partners of Tampere (held in Tampere).
  • 1997, August - participation of two youth basketball teams from Nizhny Novgorod schools in an international basketball tournament "Dolphin - 972".
  • 1997, September - Finish specialists from the Institute of medical nutrition organized five-day courses of diabetic disease's treatment for the colleagues from Nizhny Novgorod (held in Nizhny Novgorod).
  • 1997, September - Days of economics and culture of Nizhegorodian region in Tampere .
  • 1998, May 25-30 - Days of economics and culture of Tampere City in Nizhny Novgorod.
  • At present the following projects are being developed in Nizhny Novgorod in cooperation with Finish enterprises:
  • - cooperation of Nizhny Novgorod Car Building Plant with "SKJ" in the sphere of metal waste materials' remanufacturing;

    - a project of electrical energy economy in the process of distribution in Nizhny Novgorod (prepared by "NOKIA");

    - a project (controlled by "NOKIA") of reconstruction of two five-storey houses built in 1960-70 years;

    - cooperation between "Rummako" and Gorky Metallurgical Plant.

  • 1999, January - an official visit of Tampere City Council's delegation to Nizhny Novgorod.
  • 1999, March - a visit of a physicians' delegation from Nizhny Novgorod to Tampere.
  • 1999, May - participation of a Nizhny Novgorod Administration's delegation in a Helsinki conference on the perspectives of investments in Russia.
  • 1999, May - five students of Nizhny Novgorod Theatrical School participated in An International Festival of Puppet Theatres in Tampere.
  • 1999, September 13-15 - participation of a Nizhny Novgorod Administration's delegation in A First Congress of cities-partners of Finland and Russia, held in Kuopio City (Finland).
  • 1999, September - an exhibition of Nizhny Novgorod architecture in Tampere.
  • 1999, December - TACIS project "Local Democratic Network" started in cooperation with Bologna, Nizghny Novgorod and Tampere. It will finish in march 2001.
  • 2000, February - an exhibition of photographers from Nizhny Novgorod, held in Tampere.
  • 2000, June - a visit of Nizhny Novgorod mayor to Tampere, resulted by signing of "An Accord about trilateral cooperation between cities-partners Tampere , Nizhny Novgorod and Essen".

  • At present - preparation for a Students Exchange Programme between The Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy and The Tampere  Polytechnic University.
